The US Air Force was established August 1, 1907 as a division of the Army. They only had access to kite balloons until they bought their first airplane from the Wright Brothers in 1908. In 1947 The Air Force became its own branch of the military. The term "Air Force One" is the name given to the plane used to transport the US president. This term was first was used in 1953 for the Columbine II, used by President Eisenhower. Nowadays, Air Force Ones are typically Boeing 747-200Bs. Their fuel tank holds enough to travel the plane from Washington D.C. all the way to Tokyo, Japan without needing a refuel.
