LA TORRACCIA
La Torraccia, o Torre Vecchia, è una fortificazione medievale di 14,50 metri di altezza che si trova lungo la Via della Principessa, la strada che da San Vincenzo conduce a Piombino. La torre fu costruita dai Pisani e ristrutturata dai Fiorentini sotto Cosimo I De’ Medici, nel XVI secolo. A memoria di questo, su un lato dell’edificio campeggia una lapide che riporta la scritta “Cosmus Med. Florentiae et Senar: Dux II“.
La struttura, in origine, aveva funzione di avvistamento contro i nemici ma, in seguito all’avanzamento della linea costiera che la portò, come è oggi, a 100 metri dalla battigia, ne fu decretato il disarmo.
Sotto la torre, in origine, scorreva il canale di scolo del lago di Rimigliano, oggi prosciugato.
Fino al 1871 la Torraccia era di proprietà del Granducato di Toscana. In seguito, passò allo stato e infine a proprietari privati, a cui appartiene ancora oggi.
La spiaggia della Torraccia è stata, nel secolo scorso, il palcoscenico di alcune esercitazioni militari svoltesi alla presenza del re d’Italia Vittorio Emanuele III e dell’allora Presidente del Consiglio Benito Mussolini.
Nel 2016, a seguito dei lavori di ristrutturazione dell’edificio, nei pressi della torre è stata scoperta un’antica strada, probabilmente di origine romana, sepolta sotto l’asfalto.
La Torraccia è una struttura privata, ma grazie a un accordo con i proprietari è visitabile anche dal pubblico.

THE "TORRACCIA"
The Torraccia, or Torre Vecchia, is a medieval fortification of 14.50 meters in height that is to be located along the Via della Principessa, the road that leads from San Vincenzo to Piombino. The tower was built by the Pisans and restored by the Florentines under Cosimo I De' Medici, in the 16th century. In memory of this, on one side of the building stands a stone with the inscription "Cosmus Med. Florentiae et Senar: Dux II".
The structure originally served as a lookout against enemies but, following the advancement of the coastline that brought it, as it is today, 100 meters from the shoreline, it was decided to disarm.
Under the tower, originally, ran the drainage canal of the lake of Rimigliano, today dried up.
Until 1871 the Torraccia was owned by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Later, it passed to the state and finally to private owners, to whom it still belongs today.
The beach of the Torraccia was, in the last century, the site of some military exercises held in the presence of the King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III and the then Prime Minister Benito Mussolini.
In 2016, following the renovation of the building, near the tower was discovered an ancient road, probably of Roman origin, buried under the asphalt.
The Torraccia is a private structure, but thanks to an agreement with the owners, it can also be visited by the public.

DER TURM
Die Torraccia oder Torre Vecchia ist eine 14,50 Meter hohe mittelalterliche Festung, die sich an der Via della Principessa befindet, der Straße, die von San Vincenzo nach Piombino führt. Der Turm wurde von den Pisanern erbaut und im 16. Jahrhundert von den Florentinern unter Cosimo I. De' Medici renoviert. Zur Erinnerung daran steht an einer Seite des Gebäudes eine Gedenktafel mit der Aufschrift "Cosmus Med. Florentiae et Senar: Dux II".
Die Struktur diente ursprünglich als Ausguck gegen Feinde, aber nach dem Vorrücken der Küstenlinie, die es, wie es heute ist, 100 Meter von der Küstenlinie brachte, wurde es die Entwaffnung verordnet.
Ursprünglich verlief unter dem Turm der Entwässerungskanal des heute ausgetrockneten Rimiglianosees.
Bis 1871 war die Torraccia im Besitz des Großherzogtums Toskana. Später ging es an den Staat und schließlich an private Besitzer über, denen es noch heute gehört.
Der Strand von Torraccia war im letzten Jahrhundert Schauplatz einiger militärischer Übungen, die in Anwesenheit des italienischen Königs Vittorio Emanuele III und des damaligen Ministerpräsidenten Benito Mussolini abgehalten wurden.
Im Jahr 2016 wurde nach Renovierungsarbeiten am Gebäude eine antike Straße, wahrscheinlich römischen Ursprungs, unter dem Asphalt in der Nähe des Turms begraben entdeckt.
Die Torraccia ist ein privates Bauwerk, kann aber dank einer Vereinbarung mit den Eigentümern auch von der Öffentlichkeit besichtigt werden.
