Geocache Description:

Admiral Lord Nelson has remarkably limited links to Monmouth: he was born in Norfolk, died at sea, and is buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. Nevertheless, the town museum holds a significant collection of Nelson memorabilia, the Naval Temple overlooking Monmouth is dedicated to Nelson among other naval heroes, and the Nelson Garden is a beautiful, secluded space in the heart of the town. This short Multi will take you on a walk through Monmouth to see three areas with (perhaps somewhat tenuous) Nelson links.

Waypoint 1 is the Nelson Museum, with its collection of memorabilia. In one of the windows there is a collection of old photographs of Monmouth, one of which shows a pub in 192A. The quayside and Wye Bridge were photographed in 1B70. The photograph of Dixton Gate is number C and was taken in 19D7. The Museum is currently closed for renovation A4 B8 C4 D3.

At waypoint 2 look to the east to view the Naval Temple on the Kymin, 2km away. Nelson visited the Naval Temple during his trip to Monmouth and described it as “one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen”. You don’t need to go there – just look at the nearby squash courts for a yellow warning sign. How many letters are there in the 2nd word (starting with A) – this is E.

At waypoint 3 you will see a Blue Plaque about the Nelson Garden. If you visit on a Sunday between 2pm and 4pm (April to October) you can enter the garden itself: a beautiful haven in the middle of Monmouth town. According to the Blue Plaque, Lord Nelson took tea here in August 18JF and the garden was a Bowling Green in 17H8. Finally, turn around to face the playing field and you will see a large iron drain cover made of Ductile Iron 600, and conforming to British Standard 4G7.

Pop your numbers into the formula N51 AB.CDE W002 EF.GHJ and look for the cache a short walk away. Please put the cache back carefully so it isn't muggled, as this can be a busy area.
