34 Lincolnshire Legends:  John and Charles Wesley

This a straightforward series which was published for the 2021 UK Mega, held at the nearby Lincolnshire Showground. The series celebrates the many famous people who were either born in, lived in or associated with the glorious county of Lincolnshire!

John and Charles Wesley

John Wesley (28th June 1703 – 2nd March 1791) was an English cleric, theologian, and evangelist, who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. The societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement that continues to this day. However, throughout his life, Wesley remained within the established Church of England, insisting that the Methodist movement lay well within its tradition. In his early ministry years, Wesley was barred from preaching in many parish churches and the Methodists were persecuted; he later became widely respected, and by the end of his life, was described as "the best-loved man in England.

Charles Wesley (18th December 1707 – 29th March 1788) was an English leader of the Methodist movement, most widely known for writing over 6,500 hymns.He was the younger brother of John Wesley and of Anglican cleric Samuel Wesley the Younger. He became the father of musician Samuel Wesley and grandfather of musician Samuel Sebastian Wesley.

Despite their closeness, Charles and John did not always agree on questions relating to their beliefs. In particular, Charles was strongly opposed to the idea of a breach with the Church of England into which they had both been ordained.

They were both born in Epworth, where their father was the Rector.
