Airborne alert was a big commitment in resources, but some infrastructure was so vitally important it was given airborne overwatch as well. No, we’re not talking The White House, Pentagon or any other national capitol building. In fact, thousands of miles away in the frozen tundra of Greenland lay a Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) at Thule AFB. The BMEWS site had a large, double-faced, phased-array radar about 6 miles from the main base. Literally in the middle of nowhere, the Thule BMEWS had a strategic location and view to detect incoming enemy (Soviet) missiles, and alert national command authorities. The site was so important that in 1961 after Chrome Dome missions began, a similar nuclear-armed BUFF would fly a figure-eight circuit around the Thule BMEWS at altitudes exceeding 30,000 feet. The “Thule Monitor Missions” was to ensure communications if the site was attacked. If a strike disabled the site, the BUFF would alert SAC headquarters using any means available. The mission was flown twice daily, in 12-hour monitor missions.
