Inspired by Flick’s Welland Canal Tour (GC7713) this multistage
cache takes you on a scenic tour of the head of the St Clair river.
It’s 4 km from start to cache and can be hiked, biked or driven
(there is parking close to each stop and it follows a biking/hiking
trail).
At three of the locations you will need to collect a four-digit
year. Divide by 1000 and subtract from the longitude and latitude
given to get the coordinates of the next stop. For example:2002
divided by 1000 gives 2.002. Subtract from N 43º 02.163 W 82º
26.992 gives N 43º 00.161 W 82º 24.990 which just happens to
be a parking spot a short walk from Stop 1. (Remember there are 60
minutes in a degree so subtracting 2.000 from N 43º 01.000 is N 42º
59.000)
Stop 1) The Big One
A great view of the mouth of the river. A plaque marks the “Big
One”. Note the Year it happened. Divide by 1000 and subtract from
N43º 01.823 W82º 27.229
Stop 2) A Famous Voyage
GPS readings here are problematic due to what’s above you but it’s
a popular spot for boat watching, fishing, chip wagons or just
hanging out. Note the Year of the Voyage. Divide by 1000 and
subtract from N 43º 00.943 W82º 26.097
Stop 3) Famous Canadians?
These ones don’t make such a mess as the real ones. There's no year
here since the plaque went missing so count the number of big birds
(hint: make sure you get an odd number), divide by 10 and
ADD to the following latitude and longitude: N 42º 58.194 W
82º 24.148
Stop 4) The Little Ones
The river bank to your West is a filled in wreck (not from #1 but
from a collision close to #2) - but what you’re looking for here is
the Year of the Model. Divide by 1000 and subtract from N 43º
00.803 W 82º 26.788
Stop 5) On The Rocks
You don’t need to beat about the bush to find this cache. Take a
trail onto the rocks and you’ll find it under one of them, but
there are a lot of them! The cache is a 2.5 litre Rubbermaid
container.
