Forte de S. Roque

Foi erguido no contexto da Guerra da Restauraçao da independência portuguesa, quando foram promovidas modernizações na defesa de Castelo de Vide, visando adaptá-la aos modernos tiros da artilharia.

Os seus trabalhos iniciaram-se já em 1641, ampliados a partir de 1644 sob projeto e direção do engenheiro-militar e arquiteto militar, Nicolau de Langres. Em 1660, no auge desse processo de fortificação, a defesa da vila encontrava-se repartida em dois núcleos principais: o do castelo, a Oeste, e o Forte de São Roque, a Leste, interligados por extensa linha de muralhas abaluartadas. A guarnição, à época, era de seiscentos homens e três companhias de cavalaria, o que revela a sua importância.

Posteriormente, a praça foi cercada e conquistada durante a Guerra da Sucessão Espanhola (1704), ocupada sem resistência durante a chamada Guerra das Laranjas (1801) e, por tropas francesas sob o comando do general André Massena, durante a Guerra Peninsular (1811). A destruição sofrida desde então levou à sua desativação a partir de 1823, quando se acentuou o seu processGo de degradação.

O conjunto encontra-se classificado como Monumento Nacional por Decreto publicado em 23 de Junho de 1910.

It was built in the context of the War of Independence Restoration of Portugugal, when modernizations were promoted in the defense of Castelo de Vide, aiming to adapt it to modern artillery.

His work began in 1641, expanded from 1644 under the project and direction of the military engineer and military architect, Nicolau de Langres. In 1660, at the height of this fortification process, the town's defense was divided into two main nuclei: the castle, to the west, and the São Roque Fort, to the east, interconnected by an extensive line of bastioned walls. The garrison, at the time, consisted of six hundred men and three companies of cavalry, which reveals its importance.

Later, the square was surrounded and conquered during the War of the Spanish Succession (1704), occupied without resistance during the so-called War of the Oranges (1801) and, by French troops under the command of General André Massena, during the Peninsular War1)(1811) . The destruction suffered since then led to its deactivation in 1823, when its degradation process was accentuated.

The set is classified as a National Monument by Decree published on June 23, 1910.

Para chegar a esta cache, é possível vir de carro ou a pé. Recomendo caminhar até ao local, conduzir pode não ser o melhor visto que esta terra é conhecida pelas suas ruas estreitas e íngremes. O local em si tem uma ótima paisagem sobre o alto alentejo.

To get to the cache, you can drive or go by foot. I recommend going by foot to the location, driving isn´t the best option, becuase this place is known for its narrow and stip streets. The place itself has a great view over the high alentejo.
