American Oystercatcher

The American Oystercatcher is a white and black bird with a bright yellow eye surrounded by a red ring and a long, bright red-orange bill. These birds eat clams, oysters, and other mollusks and are thus found only along the coast. American Oystercatchers are monogamous, and the young leave the nest (typically on the ground) within one day of hatching. As they are the only birds able to open mollusks with their bill, other birds such as willets and gulls will try to steal their food.

Optional: In your log let us know if you were able to identify this bird while searching for caches along this trail.
