Os machos possuem uma coloração preta, bico alaranjado e uma auréola amarelada em torno do olho. As fêmeas e juvenis apresentam uma coloração acastanhada. Todos possuem cerca de 25 cm de comprimento e uma cauda comprida. Alimentam-se de minhocas, insectos, frutos e bagas.
É uma ave residente, podendo ser observado durante todo o ano. É uma das espécies mais adaptadas aos meios urbanos, sendo comum em terrenos arborizados, campos, bosques, parques e jardins das cidades.
Nidifica em arbustos, num ninho em forma de taça feita com palha, pequenos ramos e pode usar alguma lama e plantas macias na zona interior onde coloca 4-5 ovos azuis claros com manchas avermelhadas. Se o ano for bom, podem fazer entre 2 a 4 posturas.
O ninho pode ser usado para mais do que uma postura, durando a incubação cerca de duas semanas. As crias saem do ninho passadas outras duas semanas.
São animais muito territoriais, dependendo o tamanho do território do habitat onde se encontra e da disponibilidade alimentar.
Curiosidades
É uma das espécies de ave com maior distribuição pelo território nacional.
Pode ser confundido com o estorninho-preto, embora o melro apresente uma plumagem mate e o estorninho uma plumagem brilhante e uma cauda mais curta.
Alguns melros-pretos podem apresentar um albinismo parcial, apresentando algumas penas brancas, embora raros.
Vivem, em média, cerca de 3 anos, embora o maior registo efetuado indique 14 anos de idade.

**Agradeço que não movam as caches do sítio, é-me muito difícil fazer a manutenção quando tenho de andar à procura das minhas caches... Prejudica a manutenção e dificulta tê-las sempre em boas condições.**
