Geocache Description:

Atrodiet savu akmeni! Dārza vidū nepaejiet garām dīķītim ar saliņu! Nevelti to dēvē arī par „Mīlestības saliņu”. Tikai jāiedomājas vēlēšanās, jāpāriet pāri tiltiņam, jāapiet apkārt saliņai un jāapsēstas uz akmens krēsla salas centrā. Tas viss jādara klusējot.  Ja vēlēšanās būs sirsnīga un patiesa – tā noteikti piepildīsies! Tieši jaunlaulātie bieži šeit ierodas kāzu dienā, lai apmeklētu mīlestības saliņu un tilta margām pieslēgtu savu atslēdziņu. 2020.gada 2.oktobrī tika atklāts atjaunotais Lāča dārzs.

[ENG] About 100 years ago, there was a manor park in Balvi, where only landowners were allowed to walk. In the past, behind the park there was a manor gate, which was decorated with the inscription "Dogs and farmers are not allowed to enter". Near the park there was a manor orchard, now a popular place for walks and recreation for residents and city guests - "Bear Garden".

The origins of the Bear Garden name are explained in two ways. There had been an orchard at the time of the manor, in which the nobleman had held a bear, who had been not only a very smart but also an excellent helper in the building of the manor. He has brought water and kneaded clay. One day, the servants of the manor arranged to trick the bear by giving him a sieve instead of a bucket. The bear carried water without realizing it, but all the water had poured out. The bear was angry, but he was also smart, picked up the clay and covered the sieve holes, so the water was no longer pouring out. This is the story of the manor bear, which in a sense can also be true, because several publications in the press show that a trained bear has been kept in the manor. The second story is related to Kārlis Lācis, who has been one of the guerrilla fighters. The older locals still remember that in the 1930 s the garden belonged to the mayor of Balvi city, a lawyer, and the commander of the guard regiment, Kārlim Lācim. In 1923, the government granted him a 13-hectare land "Dīķīši" in the very center of Balvi (now Bear Garden) for his service in the Latvian army. The locals called it Bear Garden at the time, and the name, though informally, was taken with us.

As you walk through the former orchard of the manor, you will be addressed by giant boulders who have travelled from the whole of the former Balvi district. The current "Bear Garden" with 23 huge boulder compositions was created in the 20th century. In the 1990s. The composition of the stones was composed by sculptors G. Bule, V. Raudseps and V. Rubulis. Artists have depicted the development of Time and Force with the help of stone compositions, which concludes with the Immersion or a stone chair on the island. At the moment, there are 49 large boulders in the garden. Almost all types of boulders found in Latvia can be seen here. Local prophets say that some stones are even healing. Find your stone! In the middle of the garden, don't pass a pond with an island! It is also called as “The Island of Love.” Just think of the desire, go over the bridge, walk around the island and sit on a stone chair in the center of the island. All this must be done in silence. If the wishes are sincere and true - it will surely come true! It is the newlyweds who often come here on the wedding day to visit the island of love and connect their keys to the railing of the bridge. The renovated Bear Garden was unveiled on October 2, 2020.
