*** The Middy ***
The Petersfield to Midhurst railway - A.K.A. "The Middy" was built by the London & South Western Railway (LSWR) and had intermediate stations "Rogate & Harting", which was actually at the village of Nyewood, and Elsted which was actually at Elsted Marsh. The line opened on 1st September 1864 and closed on 5th February 1955 and most of the line and associated infrastructure was removed soon afterwards.
There are still some remains along the route and this small series of caches has been placed at or close to some of those points of interest.
If you had stood here during the time of The Middy looking South you would have seen the embankment with trains running along The Middy
The line is long gone, but the remains of the railway bridge across the meandering South Stream is in the trees about 100m West of here.
See Gravelroots for more information on The Middy
and the BFI for black and white archive film of trains running on the line.
*** The Cache ***
The bridge you're looking at now isn't quite so grand!
The walk down from the parking waypoint can be muddy after rain and this path can be busy with walkers so please be stealthy.
Please bring a pen as there isn't one in the cache, and replace as found.
