People in the area of the West Gurney Post Office petioned to form a new district out of the Bunker Hill district in 1908. The new district was named West Gurney. Gurney Post Office was located on the state line. There was also an East Gurney School located in Kansas. The first school was built of sod and was later repladed with a wood building in 1913. There was no water at the school and kids had to bring their own water. The school also doubles as a church until the Armel Methodist Church was built. The district continued until 1951 when it was consolidated with Armel
