Geocache Description:

Welcome to Glacial Park

Please use caution when getting within 10 feet of this cache! The ground can be slippery so please pay attention to where you are stepping. Also ticks have a strong presense this year so please be sure to check yourself.

Glacial Park is located at the very most northestern corner of McHenry County. This conservation area was purchased in 1975 and encompasses 3,412 acres and holds a diverse variety of habitats that include prairie, wetlands, oak savannas and glacial kames. Glacial Park is the Conservation District’s most popular site, visited annually by more than 64,000 guests who hike or horseback along eight miles of trails; fish the shoreline of creek at Keystone Landing or Pioneer Road Landing…or bike a five-mile portion of the 26-mile Prairie Trail that skirts the eastern boundary of the park. In a place where wildlife viewing is plentiful, many spend time birding, picnicking or paddling the glistening waters of the meandering creek,a high-quality stream teeming with aquatic life — a place where numerous wetland waders and local wildlife also visit the water’s edge.

In the 1950s, due to an increase in wetland drainage in the area, settlers needed to get an increased volume of water out of the area more quicky. They straightened or channelized the creek. While this incredible task did accomplish its goal, it harmed much of the plant and animal life living in the creek. Animals such as mussels or fish, sensitive to incresed turbidity, suffered. Land downstream flooded without a flood plain in this area.

Cache Your Way Question

In 2000, the McHenry County Conservation District undertook a major restoration project and remeandered which creek to its natural path? This project imporved wetland habitats by preventing erosion. With the improved water quality, many animals returned to this creek.
