Geocache Description:

The Strange Fish Series honors the odd and unloved fish species of Wisconsin.  Whenver possible I put a cache near a catch!  Today's Strange Fish is an odd one indeed.  Officially called the Freshwater Drum it also goes by Sheepshead, Gaspergou, Grunter and Croaker.  Several of its names, including part of its Latin name Aplodinotus grunniens, refer to its odd ability to make weird grunting noises when held by fishermen.

A new species to me I caught two of them in this stretch of the Chippewa River in July of 2021.

This cache could be a bit challenging.  There is a small pull off on the road above.  You'll then want to cross the busy road carefully and make your way down a rather steep path.  Turn right and walk a short distance.  I've tried to place this cache somewhere it will be found only by cachers and in a location fitting to where you catch these guys.  They like the downstream side of bridges.  In fact they probably have their tails right up against the concrete.  They seem to favor areas of jumbled rock.  And if you peek right into where they are hiding....they'll probably peek back out at you!

Please be careful on the rough footing and replace as you found it.

Happy (Strange) Fishing!
