Did you know that a castle once stood where the two towers in front of you are now?

The owners, Bertha and Potter Palmer, were among the first residents of the Gold Coast in the 1880s. A power couple, they hosted many famous people at their castle - or mansion - including presidents and royalty. Their mansion was completed in 1885 and cost over $1 million - which is now over $28 million!
This 'jewel' was demolished in 1950. Speaking of 'jewels,' Bertha has herself been called 'The Jewel of the Gold Coast' and is credited with inventing the brownie for the 1893 Columbian Exposition.
Bertha and her husband are entombed in Graceland Cemetery, in a mausoleum as magnificent as their mansion.
