Geocache Description:

** BE SURE TO BRING A PEN!! ** PLEASE USE STEALTH **

Welcome fellow residents or nearby neighbors of McDonough, GA! I titled this cache "The Geranium City" because the city hosts a Geranium Festival each springtime on the third Saturday in May, celebrating the locally grown flowers and community. The one-day festival serves as a showcase of local artistry and talent through the open-air craft markets and live musical performances. The cache should be easy to find, with just a quick glance around ground zero. If you visit the location at night, you may need a flashlight to avoid bugs and to see the cache itself.

The most notable history of McDonough, Georgia took place here on June 23rd, 1900. The Camp Creek Train Wreck occurred on the premises of this park. The northbound train hit an area of high water and flooding on the train tracks 1.5 miles north of the town, causing the train to plunge 60 feet into the creek below before bursting into flames. It, unfortunately, killed 35 of the 45 aboard the train. Rest in peace.

Here are some other fun facts about McDonough: The town was named for naval officer Commodore Thomas Macdonough and founded in 1823 around a traditional town square design. The buildings surrounding the square are intact, although there are some vacancies. The county courthouse and historic jail building are on the north side near the Welcome Center in a historically maintained Standard Oil service station, built in 1920. The station also houses the Main Street Program Office and Hospitality and Tourism Office.
