Opal Mine in the Red Rock Canyon BLM area.
Take the dirt road on the East side of Highway 14 3.5 miles North of Ricardo Campground (N35 24.829', W117 58.829') Follow the dirt road and the brown/yellow signs that say "Opal" (see picture). The road is approximately 2.6 miles long to the entrance of the mine. Don't miss the last turn at N35 24.474', W117 57.024'. The roads are very sandy, so a 4-wheel drive is preferable, although we managed in a 2-wheel. There are no longer any care-takers for this mine, it is open to all. Bring a rock hammer and a shovel and have at it. There are fire opals (rare) and white opals (common). The opals are either weathered out or in the vesicular basalt (dark, porous rock).
