Geocache Description:

Les versants escarpés qui dominent le bourg de Saint-Léonard sont façonnés dans le flanc sud du synclinal varisque de Saint-Léonard-des-Bois où se succèdent les formations ordoviciennes, du Grès armoricain au Grès de May.

Le rocher de l’Egouttoir présente un affleurement de Grès armoricain très facile d’accès, situé en bordure de route au lieu-dit le Gué Plard. Cet affleurement présente de nombreuses figures sédimentaires.

Les bancs de Grès armoricain sont constitués de quartzite, roche très dure à cassure lisse, formé de grains de quartz fortement engrenés les uns dans les autres.

The steep slopes which dominate the village of Saint-Léonard are shaped in the southern flank of the Variscan syncline of Saint-Léonard-des-Bois where the Ordovician formations follow one another, from Grès Armoricain to Grès de May.
The Rocher de l'Egouttoir presents an outcrop of Armorican sandstone that is very easy to access, located by the roadside at a place called Gué Plard. This outcrop presents many sedimentary figures.
The Armorican sandstone beds are made of quartzite, a very hard rock with a smooth fracture, formed of quartz grains strongly meshed with each other.

Les courants marins et le vent impriment des figures à la surface des sédiments. Ces figures sédimentaires, associées aux faciès de la roche, permettent d'effectuer des reconstitutions paléo-environnementales au temps de la formation de ces structures (contexte glaciaire, lacustre, marin profond...)

The sea currents and the wind print figures on the surface of the sediments. These sedimentary figures, associated with the facies of the rock, make it possible to carry out paleo-environmental reconstructions at the time of the formation of these structures (glacial context, lacustrine, deep sea ...).

Surface mamelonnée
Les ondulations de la surface des bancs sont liées à l’existence de litages obliques en mamelons (Hummocky Cross Stratification). Ces HCS indiquent que le sédiment, un sable quartzique très pur, s’est déposé dans un milieu marin soumis à l’action des tempêtes.

Rammed surface
The undulations of the surface of the benches are linked to the existence of oblique bedding in nipples (Hummocky Cross Stratification). These HCS indicate that the sediment, a very pure quartz sand, settled in a marine environment subjected to the action of storms.

Structures en brioches
En creusant le sédiment, les courants ont isolé sur le fond marin des formes arrondies appelées « brioches ». Ces structures érosives, assez fréquentes dans les grès ordoviciens, sont contemporaines de la sédimentation.

Brioche structures
By digging up the sediment, the currents isolated rounded shapes called “brioches” on the seabed. These erosive structures, quite frequent in Ordovician sandstones, are contemporaneous with sedimentation.
