Geocache Description:

This is a huge cemetery full of so much history! Actually there are two cemeteries here, right next to each other, Elmwood and Evergreen.  Cilvil War and Revolutionaory soldier's graves can be found in parts of Elmwood. It's a great place to study markers for genealogists too! If you passed the red brick buliding, it is part of the original cemetry built in 1809 in which local red clay was used to make the bricks.

While walking through this peaceful 50 acres of land, I saw this little area off to the side that just seemed a little, well, sad. Most of the markers here have really deteriated, are broken or sucken in the ground. After talking to one of the employees in the office, I've learned that legally, in New Jersey, they aren't allowed to restore gravesites unless they recieve permission from the family.....even if that family may be all gone. This seems crazy to me! There's so much history to be lost when those markers loose the stories etched in their stone.  So I figured the least I could do was make sure they aren't totally forgotten and send some geocaching visitors their way!
