Geocache Description:

This is a simple multi and the posted coordinates are given for the second discharge point of the Longford River into the Thames. The container itself is not here but can be found a short walk away.

Along this stretch of the River Thames, you can see a number of herons perched on buoys and posts keeping a watchful eye on the river traffic and passers-by. They are easier to spot than the Longford River mouth itself, which is a smaller outlet than #1 in this series and slightly overgrown by greenery . However, you can hear it! The water that discharges here is that which is left over after being used for the various Hampton Court Palace gardens and water features.

To locate the cache container, start at the discharge point and find the following information:

  • Number of internal bars in the wall grille of the discharge point = A
  • Number of rivets in the belt buckle on the motto on the main golden fence panel outside the Privy Gardens = B
  • How many pounds you have to pay to moor your boat after your first free 24 hours expires = C
  • The postcode for the mooring, as given on the notice, is KTD EAU
  • Next to the charges board, there is a small notice informing wheelchair users that the ramp is FG  metres away

Put the information into the following formula: - N51 (A/2)B. ED(B*2) W000 (A*G).(D/4)(F*0)D

Again, if you are caching with children please be very careful as you will be searching an area very close to the bank of the Thames. There is parking nearby, some you will have to pay for and some time limited parking on the nearby streets if you are lucky. The cache has been placed with the kind permission of Richmond upon Thames Council.

The Longford River is an artificial distributary about 19km long. It diverts water from the River Colne at Longford, then runs through Feltham and Hampton, and distributes it to all the water features in Bushy Park and Hampton Court Park (Home Park). It has 3 main outlets into the Thames in the Hampton locality:  opposite Tagg's Island, near the Privy Gardens, and at Ravens Ait.
