LEGEND

Warsaw Mermaid

The capital city of Poland, Warsaw, is the city of many stories, legends, and myths. The mythical creatures in those tales and marks of their adventures can be found all over Warsaw, if you have a good eye and a little bit of imagination. If you wonder what’s the most popular Warsaw legend, the answer can be only one - the story of Warsaw Mermaid. She used to swim around the city, admiring its beauty. And when she got tired, she would sit on the riverbank and sing delightful songs that warmed the hearts of all nearby fishermen. One day, a greedy merchant heard her sing, and trapped her. She would have perished if not for one fisherman’s son, who heard her crying and set her free. Grateful mermaid swore she will protect Warsaw, and according to the legends, she still stands vigil in the waters of Vistula.

You can find her image all over the city, with one of the most famous monuments in Warsaw’s Old Town Market Square, and the other at Vistulan Boulevards, right next to Śląsko-Dąbrowski Bridge. Another note-worthy depiction can be found on the historic bridge next to Karowa Street. If you’re careful, you can see her in many other places in the city, especially in the Old Town. She’s the symbol Warsaw, represented even in the city’s coat of arms, where she is depicted in a courageous pose with a sword and a shield.
