Union School
Located in Middletown’s South Main Street Historic District, Old South Park was the location of South School (originally known as Union School). The school was not in use on April 23, 1965, when it caught fire and was badly damaged. After it was torn down, the land became a city park. The park covers a city block bounded by South Main Street, 5th Avenue, Yankee Road, and 4th Avenue. As of 2018, the park features two lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, picnic tables, playground equipment, and a shelter, as well as the historic Robbins Fountain. The fountain was found in a storage area at Woodside Cemetery. Working with Preservation, Restoration, and Improvement of South Main (PRISM), Polly Robbins had the fountain restored and placed in the park in honor of her late husband, Douglas. Included with it is a reflecting pool. The park is 4.57 acres in size.
