Beauchief Abbey was founded by Robert FitzRanulph de Alfreton between 1172 and 1176 and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the newly canonised St Thomas Becket. It was of the Premonstratensian order founded by St Norbert at Prémontré in France in 1120.
St Norbert did not intend members of the order to be contemplative monks, but rather ‘Canons Regular’ whose work involved preaching and pastoral ministry. For this reason, instead of following the monastic Rule of St Benedict, they followed the earlier Rule of St Augustine, written in about the year 400 as an outline for religious life lived in community. It committed them, firstly, to observance of the rule; then to moderation and self-denial; the care of necessary things (such as clothes) and treatment of the sick; good governance and obedience; prayer; and finally chastity and fraternal correction.
The last Abbot of Beauchief, John Greenwood (also known as John Sheffield), died in 1536 and the Abbey was finally dissolved by King Henry VIII's commissioners in 1537. Today only the western tower of the Abbey remains, together with some ruins. The tower is attached to an Anglican church built in the 17th century in which there are still regular services.
Located a short walk from the remains of the old abbey is this geocache, which you can find at the following coordinates:
