One fateful Sunday evening, the Sea Wing began its return trip from Lake City to the ship's hometown Diamond Bluff. Though primarily used as a log-rafter, the vessel was used as an excursion to go to Lake City, the site of the Minnesota National Guard summer encampment that year. However, on the return trip, heavy gusts of winds pushed the vessel to its fate and many lost their lives. It is one of the worst accidents on the Upper Mississippi river recorded, as many lost their lives. A memorial was erected by the Goodhue County Historical Society on its 100th anniversary in Levee Park.
