Corals are sessile marine invertebrates of the phylum Cnidaria. They form colonies of individual polyps that are genetically identical. Corals are the major contributors to the structure of coral reefs such as the Great Barrier Reef on the east coast of Australia. They build reefs by making a calcium carbonate exoskeleton that fuses with the exoskeleton if its neighbours making a large mass of coralline limestone. Since the corals only live on the surface of this mass it keeps getting larger and larger creating a coral reef.
