Geocache Description:

BYOP! Pliiats kaasa!

NB! See ei ole õige mälestuskivi Osiliensis Episcopuse lahendamiseks.

ENG: In 1238, Bishop Heinrich I of Osiliensis Episcopus agreed with the Livonian German Order that income of land along the Perona River (now river Sauga) would go to the construction and maintenance of Perona Cathedral. In 1241 construction began, 1251 Bishop Heinrich I dedicated it to Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and the evangelist John. It was a good deal, because received amount was enough to build a cathedral school. It was a rare occasion, Perona was the only city in Livonia next to Riga where the school was established.

The bishop who founded the cathedral died in 1260 and was buried in his church. Two years later, the city was looted by Lithuanians. Gradually, however, a parish church was dedicated to the apostle Thomas to replace the burnt cathedral. After sale of the state Osiliensis Episcopus to the King of Denmark, the territories were conquered by the Poles and the King of Poland ordered the demolish of both: Church of Thomas and city. It was done in 1609.

Stones of the church were later used with the permission of the King of Sweden to build a city school and hospital on Embecke side, and it is said that many city dwellers also used these stones in their foundations.

NB! This is not the memorial stone you need for solving Osiliensis Episcopus.
