RUBY ANTHRACITE FALLS
Ruby Anthracite Falls consists of two seperate waterfalls, one about 150 feet downstream from the other. The Upper Falls (left) is a modest cascade that splashes about 20 feet into a punchbowl. You could walk right underneath it if you wanted. The Lower Falls (right) is much more impressive. A segmented falls consisting of a 45 foot upper block of vertical water, and a 20 foot lower slide that dances down the sheer, rocky cliffs that the creek has eaten away.
This is one of the only caches in this series where the waterfall isn't the best part! While Ruby Anthracite Falls is truly beautiful, this may be the best place I have ever been for wildflower viewing. I have visited this spot a couple of times, and in June-July the wildflowers are nothing short of spectacular.
Anyways, with that aside, this two-for-one waterfall cache will take you past the beautiful Ruby Anthracite Falls (what a mouthful!) It is named after a type of anthracite, a type of hardened coal that can be found in the area. There's a mountain range nearby also named Anthracite Range, so keep an eye out to see if you can find some!
It really is an amazing area with pristine mountain views and wildflower fields. Make sure to explore Lake Irwin while you are here! This whole area is spectacular. Here's some hints on how to find this cache:
HOW TO FIND
This cache should be pretty straightforward to find! It will take you past both falls, so make sure to explore the area while finding. Continue on from the lower falls to get to those wildflower fields I mentioned earlier!
Hike down the trail about 500 feet to the lower falls. Keep going!
The Lower Falls. The cache is downstream from the falls by just a bit.
The cache is underneath this log pile, specifically the large piece of bark. There's an ammo can under there! Happy caching!
This is one of the CO Waterfall Series caches, inspired by worldwaterfalldatabase.com and Marc Conly, author of Waterfalls of Colorado. Other caches in this series can be found here!
