Geocache Description:

On 30th December 1961, the last scheduled passenger trains ran between Hitchin and Bedford. Taking just over half an hour for the journey to Bedford, the 7.00pm from Hitchin made the very last journey, hauled by BR Standard Class 2MT 2-6-2T, number 84005. At about 7.07 the train would have passed in front of you blowing its whistle as it crossed the roadway. Since there is no signal box nearby and no crossing man's cottage it seems likely that it was unmanned and probably ungated as the road only went to a couple of cottages 100 yards or so away. The Hitchin to Bedford Line closed before Beeching and for much of its route there is little evidence of the trackbed. The few road bridges are steadily disappearing, but the tunnel near Old Warden is still intact although very much out of bounds.

The cache is a 35 mm film pot placed behind another icon of the past located roughly where the crossing gate might have been. You can park right next to the GZ if you want, but it is much nicer to walk round the area (and take in a few other caches as well)
