Jenifer Lewis was born and raised in Kinloch, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. She also attended college in the area at Webster University.
After that, it was off to New York, and a star was born.
She debuted on Broadway in 1979 and soon after became a back-up singer for Bette Midler.
With many roles in film and television in which she often portrayed mothers, she earned the unofficial title “Black Mother of Hollywood.” Her most well-known appearances include roles in “Black-ish” and “The Preacher’s Wife.”
For her work both on and off stage, she was recognized by the NAACP with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
