Monte Baldo
Rifugio Giovanni Chierego
Costruito nel 1963, anno del centenario di fondazione del Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), il rifugio è intitolato al medico-alpinista ex Presidente della sezione CAI di Verona e sorge in uno dei punti più suggestivi e panoramici della lunga cresta che per 40 km caratterizza il massiccio del Monte Baldo, dal tedesco Wald, ovvero bosco, Bald in tedesco medievale.
Situato a 1911 metri di quota ai piedi di Cima Costabella, il "Rifugio Giovanni Chierego alla Costabella", questo è il suo nome completo, è una splendida terrazza dalla quale lo sguardo spazia sul panorama circostante: la Val d'Adige, la Lessinia, il massiccio del Carega, i Monti Berici, i Colli Euganei, Verona, la Pianura Padana, il Lago di Garda e nei giorni migliori il versante settentrionale della catena degli Appennini, mentre più raramente si possono osservare il Monte Rosa ed il Monviso ad Ovest, Venezia e la laguna veneta ad Est.
Molto più spesso invece lo spettacolo si accende letteralmente di notte: attorno luccicano le luci di città, paesi e contrade vicine e lontane, mentre in alto brilla il firmamento, al punto che, soprattutto in Estate, non è raro incontrare lungo i principali sentieri un via vai di piccole comitive o singoli escursionisti che salgono fin qui per godersi la rappresentazione di pleniluni, stelle cadenti, costellazioni ed i transiti della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale (ISS) ad occhio nudo!

Built in 1963, centenary of the foundation of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), the refuge is named after the doctor-mountaineer former President of the CAI section of Verona and is located in one of the most evocative and panoramic points of the long ridge that characterizes for 40 km long the massif of Monte Baldo, from the German Wald, meaning forest, Bald in medieval German.
Located at 1911 meters above sea level at the foot of Cima Costabella, the "Giovanni Chierego Refuge at Costabella", this is its full name, is a splendid terrace from which the gaze sweeps over the surrounding landscape: Val d'Adige, Lessinia, the Monte Carega massif, Verona, the Po Valley, Lake Garda and in the best days the northern side of the Apennine chain, while more rarely you can see Monte Rosa and Monviso to the West, Venice and the Venetian lagoon to the East.
Much more often, however, the show literally lights up at night: around the lights of cities, towns and districts near and far shimmer, while at the top the firmament shines, to the point that, especially in Summer, it is not uncommon to meet a comings and goings of small groups or individual hikers who go up here to enjoy the representation of full moons, shooting stars, constellations and transits of the International Space Station (ISS) with the naked eye!
