This cache is located near the Edison canal that once provided cooling water to the Mandalay ‘peaker’ power plant a mile or so to the north. Water was pumped from the canal, through the plant, then discharged to the ocean. The Mandalay power plant operated for over 50 years until the state outlawed its outdated “once-through-cooling” system. Since the plant was shutdown in 2017, the once-clear water of Channel Islands Harbor, south of the cache, has degraded, particularly in the northern end. Some efforts have been made to mitigate the problem include aerators in the Seabridge Marina. But what we really need is for the pumps to be turned back on.
There is no need to go over or through the fence to reach the cache.
