Geocache Description:

Portland Square, Brunswick Square & Brunswick Cemetery Gardens

Brunswick Cemetery was established around 1770 and later became a Unitarian burial ground until 1963. The cemetery retains a number of historic features including monuments, boundary walls and a Georgian mortuary chapel. Since the 1980's the cemetery has been used as a public park and following extensive re-landscaping in 2010, is now known as Brunswick Cemetery Gardens.

Brunswick Square is a communal garden dating to 1788, altered in 1953-54. It is a small Georgian square, now divided into four triangles by paths and the triangles all contain small rose beds. Brunswick Chapel, completed in 1834 and now being restored, is the dominating architectural feature of the square.

Portland Square was laid out by Daniel Hague in 1790. However, many of the surrounding buildings were not completed until 1815. Many of these buildings have now been restored and the square has been described as Bristol's `most complete and beautiful Georgian square'. the square is dominated by St. Paul's Church, completed in 1794, which faces onto the north-east of the square
