Geocache Description:

It was built to worship the Munakata-taisha Okitsugu Shrine on Okinoshima Island, where travel to the island is restricted except for Shinto priests. On a clear day, you can see Okinoshima Island 49 km away in a straight line.

Munakata-taisha is one of the oldest shrines in Japan that appears in Japanese mythology. The three goddesses of Amaterasu, Tagorihime, Tagitsuhime, and Ichikishimahime, are enshrined at Okitsu-gu, Nakatsu-gu, and Hetsu-gu Shrines, respectively, and are collectively known as Munakata-taisha.

Since ancient times, it has been a sea route for politics, economics, and culture with the continent, and has long been worshipped as a god of safe navigation. Also known as Michinushi-no-Muchi, it is now revered as the supreme deity not only of the sea, but also of all "roads," praying for safety in navigation and traffic.

During the excavation of Okinoshima Island, a large number of ritual relics (consecrated objects), including ancient ritual remains and ornaments from the 4th to 9th centuries, and other relics such as stone tools and earthenware from the Jomon to Yayoi periods were discovered. "The site was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2017 as one of the constituent assets of " The Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region".
