China Peak, as it is now known, stands at 6791' high and is the highest peak in the Porcatel range portion of the Portneuf range. With 1211' of prominence it surpasses the 1000' minimum to be considered a mountain (according to most official mountain related organizations). This is by far the easiest peak to summit in the valley thanks to the fire road winding up the west face.
Access via that fire road by the Barton Road Gate is open typically mid May through November and is the way to go in a car or truck. Like with most BLM land in the area, you can access the area any time of year if you are willing to go by non motorized means. If you are hiking, you can definitely take the fire road, which is 2.8 miles one way and 1,726' of elevation gain, but I would recommend taking the more enjoyable and scenic trail from the Buckskin trialhead. It is longer at 3.7 miles one way and 2,034' of elevation gain, but you will be undisturbed by trucks and cars driving by. This isn't a bad bike ride either.
Lastly, if you are lucky enough to be travelling by ATV, you can enjoy the heavily wooded and picturesque 301 trail out of the Blackrock canyon recreation area. Just north of the parking area you will see the trail fork heading west for 301, the one you want. Following east leads to some other peak, and north for an unnamed downhill mountain bike trail cruising down from China Peak that will knock your socks off, and your stomache. This is a journey of 2.7 miles and an elevation change of 2,044'.
Permission to travel here are standard BLM rules. Permission to place the geocache here is through the BLM recreation office.
