Mother Goose #7: Draw a Bucket of Water
Draw a Pail of Water (known in the USA as “Draw a bucket of water”) is a traditional nursery rhyme that first appeared published in “The Nursery Rhymes of England: Obtained Principally from Oral Tradition” by James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps in 1843.
There is also a simple game associated with the song, the instructions are described below:
Game Instructions
Players in groups of four form squares with opposite players holding hands throughout the game. (1x3; 2x4) As they sing the song, the players sway back and forth holding hands as they sing. At the end of the first verse, player 1 goes into the inner circle under the arms of 2x4. Players continue to sing and sway back and forth; after verse 2, player 3 enters under 2x4’s arms, after verse 3, player 2 enters under 1x3’s arms and after verse 4 player 4 enters under 1x3s arms so that now all four are inside the square with everyone still holding their partner's hands.
Players remain entwined and begin to move in a circle as they sing the fifth and final verse, spinning as fast as they can go and at the end of the verse they throw up their hands and jump back.
