Once upon a very long time ago, cats were worshipped in Egypt - they even had their own goddess: Bastet, the Goddess of the Moon. Killing a cat, even accidentally, was punishable by death. When a beloved cat died, human family members shaved their eyebrows, mourned for the dearly departed, and then gave them a pharoah-ly funeral. The cat was preserved and buried with things it might need in the afterlife like milk and mice. They've come down in the world a bit since those heady days. No wonder they are crabby.
