In 1979 the "official" story of the Abbagoochie started. All of us locals know they were here long before that. But "officially" the story begins in 1979. The govorment had been doing some experiments on different creatures. Splicing DNA of many animals trying to produce a creature that could be weaponized. But two of these creatures escaped out the topps of their cages. The govorment scrambled to cover up the truth and to try to limit the damage done to the people and property in the surrounding areas.   The leading scientist on the case Bernie Carbo was made to work tirelessly with his two assistants Ray Fosse and Steve Ortiveros. Splicing the DNA in his secret lab near ground zero.  It was North of the posted coordinates under what is now a restricted area buried under the gob pile of the sago mine. What these scientists created was an abomination to all things living. It was uncontrollable a vile scary beast. It could not be tamed or trained.  Some rumors said it was a combination of Genetics from many different animals. Animals thought to be involved in the genetic sequencing were the spider, wolf, fox, human, and even blue Jays were thought to be used.

The creatures locally known as Abbagoochies were kept in a super max type cages with razor wire and electrified fences. One night durring a freak electrical storm a lighting blast knocked out the capacitors that charged the fence. At about the same time a huge oak tree fell and busted the top of their enclosure. The emense weight of the tree ruptured the containment area and opened the pen to the two viable Abbagoochies in the facility. They went over the topps of their fences and escaped in to the surrounding country side.  Upon learning the abbagoochies had escaped they govorment had to try to find them. The only option they had because of how smart and ferocious they are was to call in the Army. They used the storm as cover to activate the West Virginia national guard. They were activated to help secure the area. Captain Jason Thompson was sure they went West. but his superior Tony Solaita thought they went towards the river. They used tracking dogs to track them. Captain Thompson was correct. They had headed west towards the adjoining farms of Ron Guidry and Craig Swan. The two farmers raised cows and sheep. The abbagoochies were hungry and killed several sheep and a prize bull on their farms. The national guard hunting party knew they were close on their trail. The bodies were still warm.  The trail headed west again the two escaped animals traveling together west towards Crawford in Lewis County. The guard had many road blocks set up and were running route 4 and route 19 heavily trying to head the beasts off. Finally on a straight in front of the farm house of John Candelaria they got their chance to stop them.  The national guard marksman saw them going over the topps of the roadbank. He took aim and with one shot .....dropped one of the abbagoochies in Mr. Candelaria's yard.   In the chaos of the moment the other abbagoochie got away.  They guard tried to pick up its trail as it crossed the headwaters of stonewall jackson lake. But they assumed it drowned.  So with one fell swoop they closed the hunt and covered up the entire incident. But as all of us locals know ...the other abbagoochie did NOT drown.  1979 was a wild time to be around in Upshur County. Black helicopters govorment agents in suits.  military presence and all the cover up hush money and threats. Made for a wild time here. Visitors only hear bits and pieces thinking it's fun for tourism.  But we know the truth. It's still out there.
