Via Ausonia
Difficile immaginarlo oggi, ma c’è stato un tempo in cui al Poetto non c’erano le abitazioni di lusso che sorgono oggi. Una parentesi, circa una quindicina d’anni a partire dall’immediato dopoguerra, in cui fra la seconda fermata della spiaggia cagliaritana e l’ippodromo, sorse una sorta di baraccopoli, una piccola favela in salsa cagliaritana, il quartiere Ausonia.Dopo la distruzione di gran parte della città a causa dei bombardamenti del 1943 e la fine della seconda guerra mondiale, migliaia di sfollati rientrarono a Cagliari, trovando però gran parte delle loro case inagibili se non completamente distrutte. Alcuni di loro cercarono perciò riparo nella passeggiata coperta del Bastione di San Remy, altri occuparono le grotte di via Vittorio Veneto, altri ancora preferirono invece prendere possesso delle stalle abbandonate dell’ippodromo del Poetto, fino a poco tempo prima rifugio per i cavalli dell’esercito italo-tedesco e abbandonate dopo la ritirata nazi-fascista, dando così vita al quartiere chiamato Ausonia. Alle costruzioni in muratura si aggiunsero poi negli anni vere e proprie baracche di lamiera e cartone. I bagni erano per lo più in comune, fuori dalle abitazioni, e il terreno e le strade, vista la vicinanza con il mare e la facile esposizione alle mareggiate, si allagavano spesso, per la gioia dei bambini e un po’ meno per quella delle mamme che dovevano fare i conti con il disagio.Una zona alla quale in quegli anni fu appiccicata l’etichetta di quartiere malfamato, ma abitato da tanta gente onesta, povera ma semplice. Il quartiere Ausonia pian piano si spopolò, i suoi abitanti trovarono finalmente altri alloggi in città. Fra le fine degli anni cinquanta e i primi anni sessanta il quartiere Ausonia fu abbattuto, mentre l’Ippodromo riprese vita intorno agli anni cinquanta e nel 1959 ci fu il rilancio dell’impianto, rimesso a nuovo, grazie alle Olimpiadi di Roma. Il resto è presente, il Poetto ha cambiato veste e le villette fronte mare hanno sostituito le abitazioni fatiscenti della vecchia Ausonia.

Via Ausonia
Difficult to imagine today, but there was a time when the Poetto did not have the luxury homes that exist today. A parenthesis, about fifteen years starting immediately after the II WW, in which between the "Second bus stop" of Poetto beach and the hippodrome, a sort of slum arose, a small favela in Cagliari, the Ausonia district.
After destruction of much part of the city, due to the bombings of 1943 and the end of the Second World War, thousands of displaced people returned to Cagliari, however, finding most of their homes uninhabitable, or completely destroyed. Some of them therefore found shelter in the covered walkway of the Bastione of St.Remy, others occupied the caves of via Vittorio Veneto, others still preferred, instead to take possession of the abandoned stables of the Poetto racecourse, until recently the first refuge for the horses of the Italian-German Army and abandoned after the Nazi-fascist retreat, thus giving life to the district called Ausonia.
Over the years real shacks of sheet metal and cardboard were added to the masonry buildings. The bathrooms were mostly shared, outside the houses, and the land and the roads, given the proximity to the sea and the easy exposure to storm surges, often flooded, to the delight of children and a little less for that of the mothers who had to deal with discomfort. An area to which in those years the label of a bad neighborhood was attached, but inhabited by many honest people, poor but simple. The Ausonia district gradually depopulated, its inhabitants finally found other accommodations in the city. Between the end of the 50s and the early 60s of XX century the Ausonia district was demolished, while the Hippodrome resumed life around the fifties and in 1959 there was the relaunch of the plant, refurbished, thanks to the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.
The rest is present, the Poetto has changed its appearance and the villas facing the sea have replaced the dilapidated houses of the old Ausonia.
