I was on a Trail Snails hiking club hike today, but was late and only met them halfway up T-91 while they were coming down. They told me of a very scenic spot where T-91 overlooks Grindstone Lake. But as it was I never found the overlook - I overlooked the overlook. So just kept on walking on T-91. After awhile it seemed like it wasn't going to any overlook, so I started bushwhacking over to what seemed like it might be an overlook area.
But the trees were constantly too thick. But then I found what I think must have been an old fireline, kind of paralleling T-91 and headed up to what looked like a small hilltop. On getting up there, low and behold, it was a ridge and there was this perfect view of both lakes - Grindstone Lake and Mescalero Lake. I was surprised that the hill/ridge is sandstone - Permian Greyburg Formation.
Okay, so it's mostly T-91 and when you near the cache, get on the ridge in the saddle and look for the old fireline, and follow it right up to the Twin Lakes Overlook. Yep, a lonely cache, but that's alright, because for those who go there, a great hike and wonderful views!!! I recommend a walking stick, daypack with 3 liters of water, a lunch and snacks. (I didn't take enough water, didn't have enough food and forgot my 1st aid kit - a little under-prepared). Elevation is 7,507.
Don't forget your camera and or the fully charged smartphone, as I saw an elk herd on the way up T-91 and the osprey that is nesting at Grindstone. Cache is in a small rock cairn tucked under the scrub oak, just a little east off the trail. It's one of those gasketed fishing lure boxes with the 3 clamps - on the larger side of "small." Log is in a 35mm film canister to hopefully keep it dry.
