Geocache Description:

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that — on average — requires 167 service hours. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million in service.

This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called "Cache to Eagle" that showcases these special contributions. What was once just a stormwater basin, The Garden City Bird Sanctuary is another place where there are several Eagle Scout Projects, all great contributions to the community. Here are some of them.
  • The Parente Memorial Garden and Seating Area was the project of Eagle Scout Michael C. from Troop 55 of Garden City.
  • The Hickory Hollow Trail was re-landscaped, invasive plants removed and native seedlings replanted for the project of Eagle Scout Jim C. from Troop 80 of Garden City.
  • A Native Garden and Information Board was built for the Eagle Project of Bryan G. of New Hyde Park.
  • A Vegetable Garden was installed and over 200 pounds of fresh vegetables harvested for the Eagle Project of Jack F.
  • At least 10 more Eagle Scout Projects have been done here.
You are looking for a hidden lock-it container that's outside the sanctuary. No need to jump fences. Please be stealthy and rehide as found, using the natural camo.
The Bird Sanctuary is closed for the Winter and will reopen in the Spring. Hours are Noon to 5pm on Weekends from March to November, or by appointment. Please respect the park hours!!

Over its first 100 years, Scouting has provided millions of hours of service to communities across America. For our 100th Anniversary, we’re celebrating that legacy with special service opportunities through "A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference." You can join us, and even earn a commemorative patch! Visit Scouting.org/100years to learn more.

THIS IS OPTIONAL!
IT’S OPEN TO ALL GEOCACHERS –NOT JUST SCOUTS!
This is just one of twelve caches in the "Cache to Eagle" series placed by the Theodore Roosevelt Council. Each cache contains a keyword. Write down the keyword on the inside cover of the log book. When you have the keywords from all twelve "TRC, Cache to Eagle" caches, send a message with the link at the top of the cache page to get your patch. While supplies last.
