LAS CUEVAS DEL RODEO (ROJALES)
Uno de los atractivos de Rojales, es un conjunto de cuevas excavadas en la montaña en el siglo XVIII, realizadas por mineros murcianos que llegaron a Rojales para trabajar en labores agrícolas.
Su experiencia como picapedreros les llevó a construir su morada en la roca, dando lugar a una verdadera trama urbana subterránea que, más tarde, ante la precariedad de las casas de cañas y barro, constituyó el hogar de generaciones de rojaleros hasta principios del siglo XX.
De este modo, este curioso núcleo arquitectónico delimita a Rojales por el sur y constituye un interesante atractivo que el turista no debe olvidar visitar en su paso por el municipio.
Las Cuevas del Rodeo de Rojales son un complejo tradicional de viviendas excavadas en la roca entre los siglos XVIII-XX. La técnica de construcción consiste en excavar las pendientes del terreno, utilizando frentes de entre 2,5 a 5 metros de altura que permitan comenzar las excavaciones de las habitaciones.
La tierra extraída de la excavación se utiliza para ayudar a crear la plataforma que precede a la vivienda y en este terraplén resultante se planta un pequeño huerto-jardín que contribuía a complementar la precaria economía familiar.
Este conjunto subterráneo le confiere la característica de poseer un casco antiguo irreemplazable y, sin duda, de los más singulares de la Comunitat Valenciana. Cuentan con un emplazamiento único, rodeadas de parques urbanos y zonas de esparcimiento y de ocio, desde las que observar panorámicas de todo el municipio de Rojales, Alicante.
Un núcleo atractivo para el turismo cultural que incluye actividades formativas y participativas donde se organizan entre otras cosas: visitas guiadas para grupos, cursos, actividades extraescolares, ferias y exposiciones del mundo de las artes y oficios artesanos.
De esta forma, las Cuevas del Rodeo se han convertido en un conjunto arquitectónico popular subterráneo de gran importancia etnológica, social, cultural y turística, dónde adquirir obras de arte originales y piezas artesanales. Se ubican en este entorno el Ecomuseo del Hábitat subterráneo y el Zoco artesanal.
Gracias a la actual rehabilitación de estas barriadas de cuevas se ha conformado un “Ecomuseo del Hábitat Subterráneo Municipal” (integrado por 15 cuevas-viviendas, hoy en día cuevas-talleres artesanales y salas de exposición) y un Zoco Artesanal, en las cuevas restauradas y municipalizadas del Barrio del Rodeo, gracias a la Asociación Cuevas de Rojales, quienes a través del blog rodearterojales.blog cuentan con todo detalle la restauración, historia y el interior, con fotos, de todas las cuevas. Se trata de una asociación sin ánimo de lucro que, con la colaboración del Ayuntamiento de Rojales, contribuye a preservar y dar a conocer el patrimonio cultural y natural de Las Cuevas del Rodeo, un entorno troglodítico.
La asociación junto con el ayuntamiento de Rojales organizan el primer domingo de cada mes el evento GRATUITO de «Rodearte», donde se aúna artesanía, música, cultura, naturaleza y buen rollo junto a las Cuevas del Rodeo.

One of the attractions of Rojales is a set of caves excavated in the mountain in the 18th century, made by Murcian miners who came to Rojales to work in agricultural work.
Their experience as stonecutters led them to build their dwelling in the rock, giving rise to a true underground urban fabric that, later, in the face of the precariousness of the reed and mud houses, was the home of generations of Rojales until the beginning of the 20th century. .
In this way, this curious architectural nucleus delimits Rojales to the south and constitutes an interesting attraction that tourists should not forget to visit while passing through the municipality.
The Rodeo de Rojales Caves are a traditional complex of houses dug into the rock between the 18th-20th centuries. The construction technique consists of excavating the slopes of the land, using fronts between 2.5 and 5 meters high that allow the excavations of the rooms to begin.
The earth extracted from the excavation is used to help create the platform that precedes the house and in this resulting embankment a small orchard-garden is planted that helped to complement the precarious family economy.
This underground complex gives it the characteristic of having an irreplaceable old town and, without a doubt, one of the most unique in the Valencian Community. They have a unique location, surrounded by urban parks and recreation and leisure areas, from which to observe panoramic views of the entire municipality of Rojales, Alicante.
An attractive nucleus for cultural tourism that includes training and participatory activities where, among other things, are organized: guided tours for groups, courses, extracurricular activities, fairs and exhibitions from the world of arts and crafts.
In this way, the Rodeo Caves have become a popular underground architectural complex of great ethnological, social, cultural and tourist importance, where to buy original works of art and handcrafted pieces. The underground Habitat Ecomuseum and the Artisan Souk are located in this environment.
Thanks to the current rehabilitation of these cave neighborhoods, an “Ecomuseum of the Municipal Underground Habitat” (made up of 15 cave-dwellings, nowadays caves-craft workshops and exhibition rooms) and an Artisan Souk, in the restored caves, has been created. and municipalities of the Barrio del Rodeo, thanks to the Cuevas de Rojales Association, who through the blog rodearterojales.blog tell in detail the restoration, history and the interior, with photos, of all the caves. It is a non-profit association that, with the collaboration of the Rojales City Council, contributes to preserving and making known the cultural and natural heritage of Las Cuevas del Rodeo, a troglodytic environment.
The association together with the Rojales town hall organize the FREE “Rodearte” event on the first Sunday of each month, where crafts, music, culture, nature and good vibes come together next to the Rodeo Caves.
