If ever there was something that could capture the essence of former city parks superintendent Ken Hay, it would be a community trail. Ken was all about community partners and networking.
The city and Parks Superintendent John Bellon provided the funds for the trail sign and various agencies have pitched in since 2013 to complete the more than half-mile trail, starting from the South Portal building.
Hay died from complications with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. He served as a parks superintendent from 2008 to his retirement in 2014.
Ralph Opp, a member of the Klamath Wingwatchers board of directors, presented Hay’s family with a tribute to Ken and a presentation of a sign designating the path as the Ken Hay Nature Trail.
The sign is anchored to the trailhead kiosk near the South Portal Building. The trail meets up with a trail that travels along Lake Ewauna.
Along the path, hikers can read about the Western Pond turtle, North American beaver, mule deer, marsh wren, bald eagle, and 12-spotted swimmer that calls the wetlands home.
