Geocache Description:

Sand at South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is a tiny remote barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico, with only around 2000 or so permanent residents.

This barrier island offers the unsurpassed beauty of the Laguna Madre Bay and the Gulf of Mexico and is the ideal year-round destination for visitors .

The coastal zone consists of tidal marshes, sandy beaches, mangrove-covered areas, and many bays, estuaries, and lagoons.

Geologically speaking, Padre Island is a young island. It is one of 300 hundred islands stretching from Maine to Mexico. These natural barrier islands act to protect the mainland from the direct onslaught of storms.

Padre Island is the longest natural barrier island along the Gulf of Mexico, covering sixty-six miles along the coastline. Its natural environment and location make it a perfect place for people to enjoy outdoor activities.

Bordered by the Laguna Madre to the west and the Gulf of Mexico to the east, Padre Island stretches for 113 miles down the southern Texas coastline. It’s the world’s longest barrier island, home to a bustling resort community and habitat for 16 wildlife species with federal or state conservation status.

Rip currents (mistakenly called rip tides or undertows) are common and can be found almost daily on all South Padre Island Beaches. RIP CURRENTS KILL SWIMMERS EVERY YEAR HERE AT SOUTH PADRE ISLAND.

You do NOT need to wait for confirmation from me before logging your find. Please do not make answers in your log.
