Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache located in the vicinity of the Martello Tower at Magilligan point. It is not on the monument itself and not in the area under "state care" but provides an excellent view of the fortification a short distance away. Car parking is located close by and a waypoint has been included and further car parking can be found in the vicinity of the ferry pier.

The Martello Tower was commenced in 1812 as part of the British preparations to repel any attack by sea, from Napoleon's French forces. It wasn't completed until 1817, two years after Bonaparte had been vanquished but remains as a relic of those distant days. It would have had two 24 pounder cannon on the top platform to cover the approach up Lough Foyle and was complimented by a similar tower across the water in Donegal. In WWII it saw use again with an observation post built on top to monitor the approaches. Sand deposits have mounted up since the early 1800s and now the tower is much further back from the sea than it originally would have been. Occasionally the tower is opened to the public, for example sometimes during heritage days but these are few and far between and usually the inside of the building is not accessible to the public.

The area is interesting to visit for other reasons. There are spectacular views across the Foyle to the Donegal Hills and the beach is long and great to walk, although be warned Magilligan can see all four seasons in one day! The point is home to a 79,000 acre army firing range and accompanying base and located beside that is Northern Ireland's second most major prison, HMP Magilligan. A ferry makes the short crossing to Donegal allowing the visitor to have a look around Greencastle on the opposite shore. Check this out beforehand though, on the web, as the ferry does not run all the time and certainly not in the winter. Located beside the ferry pier is the Point Bar where food and liquid refreshment are available.

The cache is a magnetic micro. There is no need to dig or otherwise disturb any ground and please bear in mind this is a protected site.
