Geocache 3 – The Spaniard’s Gold and their God
Spanish explorer Alvarez de Pineda “discovered” Corpus Christi Bay from this island in 1519. The Spaniards investigated the Texas Coast throughout the 1500s and early 1600s, disappointed that no precious gold was to be found here. Accompanying every Spanish expedition were Catholic missionaries, eager to spread the Christian religion to the Indigenous Peoples.
Spanish ships carried the King’s gold coins to purchase supplies and trade, as needed. Ships, men, and their gold coins were lost in these rough Gulf waters. The Catholic faith in their God on the Cross was a foreign idea to the native peoples practicing their own long-established and nature-oriented traditions.
