Mining bees (Andrenidae) in the genus Perdita are the smallest bees in North America, often distinguished by distinct cream or yellow markings on their face and abdomen. In Florida, they nest in sand dunes. Instead of lining the inside walls of their nests, like most bees do, they cover the stored pollen with a glandular secretion to protect it from getting moldy. They are most active during the summer, visiting common dune plants like blanket flower (Gaillardia pulchella), dune sunflower (Helianthus debilis), and camphorweed (Heterotheca subaxillaris).
