With the recent end of the 2021-22 NFL regular season, I have had 8s and 9s on my mind. My beloved team won 8 of their final 9 games. Teams that do that are usually getting ready for a playoff run. Their fine ending, however, brought their season record to a decidedly mediocre 9-8, making them--for the second consecutive year--the best team not to make the playoffs. To solve this puzzle, keep in mind that the best offense is a defense that scores touchdowns. Oh well, with 8s and 9s on my mind, I give you OIAL 098, a puzzle about one aspect of a most unusual season.
