We decided to hold this event as we have missed seeing you! Plus it's a souvenir day haha
The event is being held outside the Saltwater Beach Cafe. The site on which Saltwater beach café resides has a history of cafés dating back to the 1900’s. The oldest and most well known café was called “The Grosvenor Tearooms”, a popular destination for local crowds as well as Londoners who searched for a quieter weekend by the sea.
The beach area is known as Jocelyne's Beach. Joscelyne's beach is immediately adjacent to Chalkwell C2C Train Station. From 1909 until just after World War II, this 200 yard section of beach was leased to Arthur Joscelyne where, along with his family, he set about developing it into a thriving business. Today it is simply the western end of a much longer stretch of beach that runs along the Thames estuary coastline at Chalkwell.
Nearby is also the Crow Stone. The Crow Stone can be found on the mud of the Thames Estuary and opposite the end of Chalkwell Avenue. This stone marks the limit of the Port of London's authority. The stone can be walked to at low tide but remains visible at high tide.
Unfortunately the cafe itself closes at 16:30 so you might want to bring a flask of something to keep you warm. This area is a wonderful place to see a good sunset, so fingers crossed for this!
There is nearby car parking on Chalkwell Esplanade: fees are £2.50 for up to an hour, and free from 6pm.
There is some free parking up the top near Chalkwell Station, and also around the Ridgeway Gardens.
Chalkwell Station on the C2C Fenchurch Street line is really close.
And obviously it is in the middle of a really good walk from Old Leigh/Hadleigh along to Southend/Shoeburyness and a whole host of caches.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it on the day. :-)
