Geocache Description:

This is the seventeenth cache in a series of caches taking you to some of the less well-known locations in The Heatons and sharing with you some of the history of the area.

Lee Gate? Lea Gate? Leegate?  I've seen all three versions of the name.  It was "Lea Gate" on the 1848 tithe map (above)

This was yet another of the old halls in The Heatons.  The old Lea Gate (let's settle on that for the name) was a hall that stood close to where this cache is hidden.  I've not been able to find any photos or even sketches of what it looked like.  Apparently, the last census return with the house listed on it was 1891 so it is likely to have been demolished not long after that.

One noted resident of Lea Gate was Canon Robert Cox Clifton (1810-1861) - he was canon at Manchester Cathedral and so it is appropriate that his residence should be next door to Mauldeth Hall (See HH #17) which at the time was the official residence of the Bishop of Manchester.

Canon Clifton laid the foundation stone for Christ Church, Heaton Norris (That's the destroyed church with only a spire on the A6). He also probably gave his name to the nearby Clifton Road which you will walk past on your way from here to HH #18.

What stands there today is very different - a 60s/70s block of flats that isn't too inspiring!

This should be an easy find for you.  You are looking for a small magnetic nano.  Don't think too hard - it's in the obvious place.
