MERMAID, a fabled marine creature with the head and upper body of a human being and the tail of a fish. In British folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) and mermen were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical and predictive powers. They loved music and often sang. Though very long-lived, they were mortal and had no souls.
Lossiemouth Mermaids were beautiful, kind and very shy, and so rarely seen. They were said to be only seen on the Halliman Skerries when the sea mist swirled and tried to protect the local fishermen from harm.
